Wellington - Tongariro National Park

Weiter geht es Richtung Norden ins Landesinnere zum ältesten Nationalpark Neuseelands. Im Tongariro National Park, ziemlich im Zentrum der Nordinsel, befinden sich 3 aktive Vulkanberge, der Tongariro, der Ngauruhoe und der Ruapehu. Das müssen wir uns natürlich genauer ansehen.

Continue northwards to New Zealand's oldest national park. In Tongariro National Park, in the centre of the North Island, there are 3 active volcanic mountains, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu. We need to take a closer look, of course.

Der Weg führt, zunächst entlang der Küste, wieder durch ausgedehntes Farmland. Wir merken, dass wir uns auf der Nordinsel befinden. Hier ist die Bevölkerungsdichte höher, es gibt mehr Verkehr auf den Straßen. Erstmals in der ganzen Zeit hier in Neuseeland erleben wir einen echten Stau, der sich aber nach ca. 10 Minuten wieder auflöst. Alles ganz entspannt hier!

Das Farmland ist grüner als auf der Südinsel, wirkt trotzdem aber recht trocken. Gelegentlich sind Anbauflächen zu sehen, der größte Teil der Flächen ist aber nach wie vor Weideland.

Endlich nähern wir uns der Vulkanregion. Der Anblick ist natürlich einmalig. Wir fahren und fotografieren und fahren bis wir in Whakapapa Village landen. Village ist übertrieben ... ein kleine Ansammlung von Hotels und Unterkünften direkt am Fuße des Tongariro. Darunter ein riesiges Steinhaus im Herrenhaus-Stil, das sich Chateau nennt und so gar nicht in die Landschaft passt. Wer hat denn das verbrochen?

Die Lage unseres Hotels ist einmalig, der Blick auf die Vulkanberge atemberaubend. Wir sind laut Hotelangabe im höchsten Hotel Neuseelands untergebracht. Das ist doch mal was.

Nach einem Rundgang im Village stellen wir fest, dass es keinen Laden gibt und der nächste Ort 30 km entfernt ist. Wir brauchen aber doch dringend für Silvester einen Sekt zum Anstoßen. Also schnell noch mal ins Auto 30 km hin und 30 zurück für einen Sekt und eine Flasche Rotwein. Den Abend verbringen wir im Restaurant des Hotels bei einem leckeren Essen und Live-Musik.

WLAN ist kostenpflichtig und das Internet sehr langsam ... ich schaffe es mit Müh und Not ein paar Bilder in den Blog zu laden.

The trail leads, first along the coast, through extensive farmland. We notice that we are on the North Island. Here the population density is higher, there is more traffic on the roads. For the first time here in New Zealand we experience a real traffic jam, but after about 10 minutes it dissolves again. Everything relaxed here!

The farmland is greener than on the South Island, but still looks quite dry. Occasionally, cultivated areas can be seen, but most of the land is still grazing.

Finally we are approaching the volcanic region. The sight is of course amazing. We drive and photograph and drive until we land in Whakapa Village. Village is exaggerated... a small collection of hotels and accommodations at the foot of the Tongariro. Among them a huge stone house in the manor house style, which is called Chateau and does not fit into the landscape at all.

The location of our hotel is unique and the view of the volcanic mountains is breathtaking. We are accommodated in the highest hotel in New Zealand. That's something.

After a tour of the village we realize that there is no shop and the next village is 30 km away. But we urgently need a sparkling wine for New Year's Eve. So quickly into the car for another 30 km and back for a sparkling wine and a bottle of red wine. We spend the evening in the restaurant of the hotel with a delicious meal and live music.

WLAN is chargeable and the internet is very slow... I manage to upload a few pictures to the blog with great difficulty.
